BABYMOUSE THE MUSICAL by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm (Random House, 2009)LIBR 264 #12

GENRE: Fiction / Graphic Novel
HONORS: None
REVIEW:  It is time for the try-outs for the school musical and Baby Mouse, encouraged by new student, Henry Higgins auditions.  Unfortunately, Babymouse is only an understudy and is not treated well by the star, Felicia.  The night of the performance Babymouse almost quits, but again, encouraged by Henry, she sticks it out.  When Felicia is unable to perform, Babymouse steps in.  While her performance is not perfect, it is memorable.
OPINION:  Babymouse is delightful.  She suffers through typical school issues but never loses her sense of humor or hope.  This is a great book for girls eager to get in on the graphic novel craze and I have found younger boys think Babymouse is hilarious as well.
IDEAS: One idea is for students to identify the various allusions in the book to other books and movies such as High School Musical, Phantom of the Opera, and Lion King.  This book is a good introduction to graphic novels for the younger students and a teacher can explain how graphic novels work.
