MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS - MOVIE LIBR 264 #11

GENRE: Movie (based on a fiction book)
HONORS: None
REVIEW:  Mr. Popper is a real estate developer in New York City who wants to become partner and will do almost anything to get it.  He learned his fathering methods from an absentee, explorer father and has found himself divorced with two children that he only sees on weekends.  Enter the penguins.  His father's last souvenir to him is a Gentoo penguin and then through a miscommunication five more arrive.  Mr. Popper is instantly a hit with his children again.  The penguins have a wonderful affect on Mr. Popper and he learns how to listen, how to be more caring, and how to be a better father.
OPINION:  Although the movie barely resembled the book that it was based on, it was a good movie.  The penguins were very funny and Jim Carrey interacted with them well.  The storyline was humorous enough to keep the children happy and had enough depth to satisfy the parents.  It was a good family movie.
IDEAS: A teacher could read the book Mr. Popper's Penguins to students or have them read it on their own and then compare and contrast the book and the movie.  It might be interesting to research the making of the movie, how the penguins were treated, and when computer generated penguins were used.
