GENRE: Picture book / Poetry
HONORS: None
REVIEW: In this book, Paul Janeczko introduces the reader to twenty-nine different poetic forms from the common couplet to the more complex pantoum. Each form of poetry has one or two examples and a brief description of the form accompanies by the illustrations of Chris Raschka. The end of the book has a more thorough glossary of the different forms.
OPINION: Paul Janeczko did an excellent job of highlight some different forms of poetry. I was familiar with most of the forms and have used them in my own classroom. Others were brand new to me. I liked how the author emphasized that although these poems all have "rules", poets can take some liberty with the rules and he challenged the reader to look for some of the variances.
IDEAS: The obvious use for this book is to introduce students to various poetic forms so that they can try their hands at writing in those forms. This book not only defines some of the more basic forms of poetry but also introduces some more complex forms ideal as a challenge to gifted students.
