GENRE: Picture book / Poetry
HONORS: None
REVIEW: This collection contains about twenty poems relating to literary monsters and their problems. From "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" to "The Invisible Man Gets a Haircut" and the poor Phantom of the Opera who is having a hard time coming up with a new song, Adam Rex creates some humorous poems. His illustrations add to the hilarity with some details that a casual reader might overlook. There is a lot of variety in this book from some traditional rhymes to cartoons to spoofs.
OPINION: I really enjoyed this book. Adam Rex's poems and illustrations had sharing lines and me chuckling with my husband and daughter. My personal favorites were "The Phantom of the Opera Can't Get 'It's a Small World' Out of His Head" and "Count Dracula Doesn't Know He's Been Walking Around All Night With Spinach in His Teeth".
IDEAS: One major use of this book is to expose children to poetry that is not boring. A teacher can also point out the different styles of poetry that Adam Rex uses. Because of all the allusions to literary monsters a reading or language arts teacher can tie in the poems with the original works in which the monsters can be found.
