GENRE: Picture book / Fiction

REVIEW:Danny is intrigued by the tiger's invitation to ride on his back. As a new kid in town this ride is a way to get noticed and feel better about himself. At first Danny enjoys his ride but then he starts to notice how others look at the tiger and him with fear. When Danny decides he would rather get off and play basketball he realizes that once you get on it is hard to get off. Danny takes a risk and jumps off the tiger expecting the tiger to retaliate but the tiger then leaves him alone.
OPINION: The woodcuts by David Frampton add to the mood of the book. This allegory by Eve Bunting is a powerful tale of making choices. Although geared at gang involvement, it can also relate to any situation that involves peer pressure and wanting to fit in and gain respect.
IDEAS:This would be a great book for the beginning of a school year to talk about peer pressure and making choices. It could also be used in conjunction with bullying discussions. Riding the Tiger can also be used when talking about allegory and metaphor.
