REVIEW: It has been 13 years since Alice took her trip down the rabbit hole and she thinks it was all just a dream. Her father has now died and she is faced with an unwanted proposal. When Alice runs off, she again follows a rabbit and falls down the rabbit hole. In Underland Alice finds out that it has been foretold that she will kill the Jabberwocky on Frabjous Day with the Vorpal Sword. Along the way, Alice meets the Bandersnatch as well as other characters from her previous trip. In the end, Alice is able to defeat the Jabberwocky and then returns home. There, she refuses the proposal and instead becomes an apprentice on a trading ship where she will have many more adventures.
OPINION: Once I got past the fact that this movie was not really Alice in Wonderland but was a twist on "Jabberwocky" I really enjoyed it. I love Tim Burton's quirkiness and his work with Johnny Depp and Helana Bonham Carter.
IDEAS: Students can compare the characters from the book Alice in Wonderland and the animated Disney movie Alice in Wonderland to see how they are the same and different. It would be a good idea to read the "Jabberwocky" poem in order to understand the movie better. There are other versions or retellings of "Jabberwocky" including a novella by Daniel Coleman and a picture book with illustrations by Christopher Myers that can be compared to see different interpretations. Finally, with so many made up words it is fun to try to figure out what they mean and practice grammar by identifying the parts of speech and seeing how easy it is to identify based on how our language works.
