TRACKERS by Patrick Carman (Scholastic Press, 2010) LIBR 264 #41

GENRE: Realistic Fiction / Adventure
HONORS: None
REVIEW: This book is set up an interrogation interview between Adam and a police officer.  As the interview progresses Adam reveals details about his life as an inventor of high tech gadgets and his three friends Lewis, Emily, and Finn.  Together they are the Trackers.  Adam receives a mysterious message and soon finds himself the target of a hack by a mysterious team of Lazlo and Zara who threaten them.  Once Adam and his team uncover Lazlo's plan and break the Raymond Code they find out it was all an elaborate test to see if they were worthy of joining the Internet Security Division.  Lazlo needs the Trackers to help track down a notorious hacker named Shantorian.  Can Adam and the team trust Lazlo and why is Adam being interviewed by the police anyway?  Readers will have to read the second book to find out.
OPINION: This was a very fun book.  When I read it, I didn't have internet access so I just read the transcripts of the videos.  Later, I went back and watched the videos on-line, which added a lot to the experience.  In addition, there are other games and missions on the website similar to what Adam and his friends experienced in the book. Being just the first in a series the book leaves the reader hanging but the second book Shantorian is available.  Readers who enjoyed The 39 Clues series will enjoy these as well.
IDEAS: Readers will definitely benefit from the on-line experiences.  If this was read as a bookgroup, the participants could stop and view the videos along the way.  After reading the first books predictions can be made about the rest of the series.
