REVIEW: Miranda's life is pretty normal. She lives with her mom and two brothers and is on the swim team. She is working on her relationship with her two friends who have changed since the death of another friend a year before. Her dad's new wife is expecting a baby and she has been asked to be the godmother. Pretty normal stuff. Then an insignificant meteor causes unexpected damage and knocks the moon closer to earth causing huge tsunamis, weather changes, and panic. Instantly Miranda's life is changed as the family now struggles with day-to-day survival and things keep getting worse. Supermarkets run out of food, gas prices soar, heating fuel and even water run out, and communication becomes impossible. Will Miranda and her family survive the winter and is there hope for mankind?
OPINION: I found this book to be very intriguing. It was interesting on how Susan Pfeffer took an event that people worldwide were anticipating and turned it into a disaster. Readers will be intrigued by the choices made by the family in order to survive. What made this book even more interesting was how the survivors became so isolated and then relied on the strength of their family to get them through. There are two other books in the series, The Dead and the Gone, which focuses on characters in New York City at the same time, and This World We Live In, which joins the characters from the two other books.
IDEAS: This would be an interesting book to tie in with the scientific study of the moon and its effects on our planet and comets and meteors and how often they hit the moon. In books like these, it is always interesting to think about what actually could happen and how the readers would react in the same situation. Of course, with two other books in the series readers will want to check them out as well.
