GENRE: Fantasy / Dystopia
HONORS: None
REVIEW: Thomas does not remember anything when he finds himself in a strange elevator. When the doors open, he finds himself in a strange place called the Glade surrounded by an ominous Maze filled with horrible creatures called the Grievers. Thomas discovers that it is the job of all the Gladers to find an exit to the maze. Or is it? Soon relative safety and regularity of life in the Glade is disrupted by the appearance of the first girl who announces that things are going to change. At the end, the Gladers discover a way out of the Maze only to find more horrors and adventures await them.
OPINION: I loved this book. I am a fan of dystopian books and this one was quite good. The ending really left me hanging and I am looking forward to reading the second book and then waiting for the third. Readers who enjoyed The Hunger Games will enjoy this and perhaps boy readers, possibly put off by a strong female character in Katniss, may enjoy this more with the predominately male characters. I would recommend this particularly for the upper end of the tweens to teen readers due to the violence and some language.
IDEAS: There seems to be a rise in dystopian books lately. It would be interesting to read some classics of the genre as well as newer books to compare and contrast them. Another idea would be to explore the difference between a Utopia and Dystopia and research the history of the two.
