GIRL'S LIFE MAGAZINE (June / July 2011) LIBR 264 #21

GENRE: Magazine
HONORS: None
REVIEW: This magazine was started in 1994 and is aimed at girls ages ten to fifteen.  This particular issue had articles on beach attire; summer reading ideas; lots of advice about boys, best friends, and body issues; an article about cutting and self-harm, and quizzes and surveys.  As the website says, "Parents can trust GL to guide their girls through the growing-up years—without making them grow up too fast."  I found that to be true for this magazine.
OPINION: I am not much of a magazine reader but there were some good aspects about this magazine.  For girls interested in style and fashion there were articles and advertisements about that.  There were also book reviews and advertisements about new books.  Finally, there were several advice columns, which are good for girls this age.  A nice magazine for the tween girls, enough information for the age and not inappropriate.
IDEAS:  Having magazines like this in the library is good for light reading.  It is good to remember that we all enjoy light reading and "gossip" every once and awhile.  The magazine also has a website with information and activities just right for girls going through the transition from tween to teen to young women.
