GENRE: TV Movie / Realistic Fiction
HONORS: None
REVIEW: The Disney Channel movie Lemonade Mouth is based on the book Lemonade Mouth by Mark Peter Hughes. It is the story of five freshmen who meet during detention and go on to form a band. The main characters are: Olivia, the shy singer; Mo, a girl trying to live up to her father's expectations; Charles, the drummer living in his brother's shadow; Wen, struggling to accept his father's new (and young) girlfriend; and Stella, the rebel. This unlikely group becomes a sensation at their school as they take on the principal and encourage their friends to "be heard, be strong, be proud". Although they do not win the Rising Star competition, they win the hearts of their fans and become great friends along the way.
OPINION: This was another great Disney movie with great music and a talented young cast. Each student has issues that he or she is dealing with and as a band and a group of friends they work through some of their problems. Kids who enjoyed the High School Musical series will enjoy this movie as well especially with the catchy songs that are available to download. Word is that Mark Peter Hughes is working on a sequel to the book and that Disney is also planning on a sequel.
IDEAS: It is always a good idea to read the book and compare / contrast the book and the movie. Another idea would be to discuss some of the issues the kids are having and whether they handled them well or not.
