HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 (Warner Bros., 2011) LIBR 264 #44

GENRE: Movie / Fantasy
HONORS: None
REVIEW: Part two obviously picks up where part one left off.  Harry, Hermione, and Ron are searching for the horcruxes to destroy them.  Voldemort has the elder wand and is waiting for his final showdown with Harry.  Once Harry and his friends return to Hogwarts it is a battle to the finish.  Many characters we have grown to love meet their ends including Snape who we have loved to hate.  His role in events and his reasons for killing Dumbledore are finally revealed much to the surprise of Harry and the others. When Harry realizes he is the horcrux Voldemort never intended to make he walks to his destined showdown with the help of his parents, Sirius, and Remus.  But of course, that is not the end.  Neville is able to fight when needed, Hermione and Ron finally admit their feelings, and all is made right in the end.
OPINION: I have not been a diehard fan of the books and movies.  In fact, I only saw a few of the movies in theaters.  Nevertheless, I found the end of the movie to be bittersweet.  It is the end of an era that began in 1998 and spanned thirteen years of books, movies, and memories.  It was a satisfying conclusion to the series.  I was pleased with the movie and found the scenes with Snape and Harry's discovery of Snape's role in everything to be particularly poignant.
IDEAS: It will be interesting now that all the movies are done to see if Harry Potter can continue to find a place in libraries.  One idea would be to go back to where it all started with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.  Get a group of nine or ten year olds, read that book as a group, watch the movie, and then continue with one or two of the books and movies a year.  As always when looking at books and movies it would be a good idea to compare and contrast and because of the length of the Harry Potter books to look at what events were left out or changed for the movie.  Did the directors make the right decisions?
