GENRE: Mystery
HONORS: None
REVIEW: Winston Breen loves puzzles and has been solving and creating them ever since he was a toddler. He had no idea though that when he gave his sister a box for her birthday it would lead to his biggest puzzle ever. Inside the box were strips of wood with letters on them. What Winston eventually learns is that his blocks are just one of four sets and when put together they will lead to a treasure. Will Winston be able to solve the puzzle and figure out who is trying to sabotage the whole thing? The book contains not only the main puzzle and mystery to solve but many other puzzles as well.
OPINION: This book was a lot of fun. I enjoy doing puzzles so I definitely went to the website, downloaded the puzzles, and attempted to do all of them with moderate success. Kids will enjoy the puzzles, the quirky characters, and solving the mystery. I enjoyed it so much I would like to read the next book called The Potato Chip Puzzles.
IDEAS: Of course, you need to get students a copy of all the puzzles from the website so they can write all over their copy and not write in the book. Doing these puzzles could lead into other books with puzzles and challenges both fiction and non-fiction such as mini-mystery books, books about Encyclopedia Brown, The Westing Games, and books about real treasure hunts. Eric Berlin is available for school visits and Q&A sessions for bookclubs over Skype and Google Chat.
