GENRE: Graphic Novel / Scary
HONORS: None
REVIEW: Terror Trips takes three Goosebumps books and adapts them into graphic novel format. The first one was One Day at Horrorland about a family that gets lost on their way to Zoo Gardens and end up at Horrorland. This adaptation by Jill Thompson chronicles their adventures and escape from the park. A Shocker on Shock Street is about two kids who are sent to test out the Shock Street Movie Set Tour. Unfortunately, the trip turns out to be a real shocker. This adaptation was done by Jamie Tolagson. The last adaptation, by Amy Kim Gantor, has a totally different feel to it. Deep Trouble is about a boy who discovers a mermaid and then tries to get her away from some scientists who want to put her in a zoo. The scariness of this book comes mainly from the action of kidnapping and rescuing and not from any monsters.
OPINION: First, I am not a big fan of comic books or graphic novels so I had a hard time reading these. I felt that the adaptation of A Shocker on Shock Street was the best of the three and I had the hardest time with One Day at Horrorland but I have not read the originals either. For boys who like graphic novels I think they would enjoy these books.
IDEAS: I would love to see students compare the graphic novel version of each book to the original. How alike are they and what is different about them? Are any of the plots lost in the graphic format? Which one do they prefer?
